ceylor and the history of the condom
The condom can reflect back over a lengthy history. The oldest image of a man wearing a condom during a sexual act originates from the period between 100 to 200 years AD. In the mid-17th century, a certain Dr. Condom began to produce protective sheaths from animal intestines, in order to prevent infections and pregnancies. Dr. Condom was apparently knighted for this idea and its implementation. Even the legendary Casanova is said to have used an „English Riding Coat“ – a form of condom produced from a sheep's intestine. With the start of the modern era and the surge in population figures, the importance of contraception also underwent sudden change: From the mid-19th century, a demand existed for industrially manufactured condoms. With the outbreak of AIDS in the 1980s, the condom gained a new significance. In 1987, Switzerland was one of the first countries to launch the first national "STOP AIDS" campaign.

  • 1916 The rubber manufacturer Lamprecht is commissioned by the federal government with producing condoms for the Swiss army, in order to reduce the number of unplanned war babies.
  • 1929 Lamprecht launches branded condoms for private individuals with the Colombo, Neverrip and Ceylon.
  • 1950 The three brands ultimately resulted in today's ceylor brand.

Since 2015, the darlings of the nation come along in a new package. The Verhüterli's still in the popular varieties for different needs of love. An enrichment for love life are the new ceylor lubes. Material & production
The majority of ceylor condoms are produced from natural latex, the material that we colloquially refer to as rubber. Natural rubber latex is obtained from the milky sap of the rubber plant. Through a technically complex process, the raw material is used to produce the finest condoms. Although constructed from multiple latex layers, the material is just 0.05 to 0.07 millimetres thick today. Thanks to this delicate skin, you experience an entirely natural sensation with the condom.


ceylor Non-Latex Ultra Thin is probably the thinnest condom in the world. The highly transparent, entirely odourless and flavour-neutral condom, produced from polyurethane through innovative methods, is only approx. 0.02 millimetres thick - half of nothing, for an intimate sensation during lovemaking. Even the most sensitive lovers are delighted, and latex allergy sufferers are perfectly catered for.

Latex condoms are produced from natural rubber latex. To obtain the raw material, the bark of the rubber plant is scarified. As the sap drips out it is collected in containers, which are positioned directly against the plant's trunk. After the harvest, the natural rubber latex is collected in large tanks and shipped around the world. Upon arrival in the production facilities the raw material is strictly tested and controlled a number of times over, because only the highest quality latex is suitable for further processing into condoms.

Chemicals are added to the raw material for further processing, and the mixture is heated. The resultant chemical reaction transfers the rubber into a stable, tear-proof and elastic state. The latex is subsequently poured into vast storage tanks and glass plungers are submerged in it. The latex sets as a thin layer on the containers. After drying, the process is repeated. The plungers are constantly rotated throughout the process, so that the latex distributes evenly. Afterwards, the condoms are heated in a furnace to vulcanise the rubber. This is the final stage of the chemical reaction and it ensures that the latex becomes sufficiently stable, stretchy and tear-proof.

The condoms are subsequently washed, electronically tested, moistened or flavoured depending on type, and packaged. In order to guarantee maximum safety, various quality tests are performed before the condoms are brought to the market.

What does the OK quality seal stand for?
It provides you with assurance and guarantees that you are using a safe and tested condom, because
  • all ceylor condoms are required to fulfil not only the requirements of the European standard for condoms (EN ISO 4074) but also the world's strictest quality requirements in accordance with the "OK" quality seal; well in excess of the normal legal standards.
  • each individual production unit is tested prior to release for sale by an independent lab. Only in this way can it be assured that controlling takes place truly independently, before the condoms come to the market.
  • a three-stage control system guarantees the safety and level of quality. Compliance with the regulations is monitored through regular random sampling in the sales outlets.

The use of good condoms is important, not only to protect you against an unwanted pregnancy but also to guard against transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Condoms also provide you with reliable protection against the transfer of further sexually transmitted diseases (STD/STI). They form a rubber barrier and prevent the pathogens from passing between one person and another - on condition that the condoms are really good, which is assured with the "OK" quality seal. OK? Standards & quality tests
All ceylor condoms meet with the European standard for condoms (EN ISO 4074). This stipulates the minimum sizes of condoms and regulates the quality tests that condoms must be subjected to. The CE test mark on each packet guarantees fulfilment of the requisite quality criteria. ceylor condoms are regularly and precisely controlled, in order to ensure faultless quality. Various material characteristics are tested in the controlling lab.

Volume test
The condom is filled with air in a testing device, until it bursts. Every tested ceylor condom must exhibit a minimum capacity of 28 litres of air - a considerable volume, if you imagine the contents of 28 litre bottles (in accordance with the requirements of the "OK" quality seal association).

     

Perforation test
Each individual condom is electronically tested for damage and tiny holes. A condom filled with water is connected to an electrode and immersed in a saline solution. If the material exhibits even the tiniest hole then an electrical current is conducted into the solution. If the measurement shows no current flow then the condom is 100% leak-tight.

Elasticity test
A piece of material that the condom is made from is clamped and stretched in a special test device. It is not permitted to tear until it has expanded by 700%. With a piece of rubber ten centimetres in length for example, this would be stretched to at least 70 centimetres.
